Munich, 12. December 2024 18:30 to 20:30
MPhil is one of Munich’s world-class orchestras and offers four Youth Concerts each season which always comprise music off the beaten path. The second concert, which the RG Munich attends, has a Finnish focus: For many years Einojuhani Rautavaara was a highly esteemed professor for composition at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy. The composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, and this evening’s soloist Olli Mustonen were his pupils. Conductor Dima Slobodeniuk in turn is a pupil of Salonen. The music by these Finnish composers is quiet, dreamy and dark. Tchaikowsky’s „Winter Dreams“ is a fitting complement to this program full of northern magic.
The details:
- Einojuhani Rautavaara, Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 »Gift of Dreams«
- Esa-Pekka Salonen, »Insomnia« for Orchestra
- Intermission
- Peter I. Tschaikowsky, Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Opus 13 »Rêverie d’hiver« (Winter Dreams)
- Conductor Dima Slobodeniouk
- Piano Olli Mustonen
The concert also features an MC, TV personality Malte Arkona, who tells interesting stories about the music and musicians – in German, so it helps to understand the language. Since the vast majority of concert-goers is very young, there is always an especially enthusiastic atmosphere.
