Southwest Asia and North Africa. Life between the Atlas and the Indus

The RG Munich explores the “Southwest Asia and North Africa” ​​department of the Museum Fünf Kontintente under the guidance of DAAD alumna and curator Dr. Anahita Mittertrainer. This region stretches from North Africa through the Near and Middle East to Central and South Asia. Predominantly shaped by Islam, each of its urban, rural or nomadic regional cultures, including non-Islamic minorities, has its own historically developed characteristics.

The exhibition includes centuries-old as well as contemporary art, objects full of deeply felt religiosity as well as objects of everyday life.

The Museum Fünf Kontinente, formerly Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde, was founded as Germany’s first ethnological museum in 1862.
