This opera, one of Gaetano Donizetti’s best-loved, premiered in Milan in 1832 and has remained at the top of the international repertory since then.
Love potions (that’s what L’Elisir d’Amore means) are a popular motif in storytelling and music. Donizetti used it 30 years before Richard Wagner did. The story goes like this: Somewhat simple-minded farmer Nemorino is inspired by the legend of Tristan and Isolde to win Adina’s love with the help of a love potion which he buys from quack doctor Dulcamara. After various trials and tribulations Nemorina and Adina finally become a happy couple. The love potion „works“! Donizetti and his librettist Felice Romani poke gentle fun at their protagonists‘ gullibility and superstition, and at the same time the music, which was supposedly written in just 3 weeks, is sad, tender, and poetic.
